Changing Your WordPress Menu

The top three questions I get from friends, family and clients with their own WordPress (WP) blog/site are:

  • Can you help me add something to the menu?
  • Can you help me remove something from the menu?
  • Can you help me change the order of the stuff in my menu?

Of course I could help them! But I’ll rather teach them and you 😀

Adding WP items to your menu

Add_to_menu

The types of WP items available to you might differ from the screenshot, but you should at least have pages, posts and categories to choose from. The Links option will be covered in the next section.

  1. In your WP Admin navigate to Settings -> Menu.
  2. Select the type of WP item you would like to add.
  3. Select the WP item you would like to add.
  4. Click the Add to Menu button.
  5. After it appears under Menu Structure, hit one of the Save Menu buttons.

Adding anything to your menu

Links_Menu

  1. In your WP Admin navigate to Settings -> Menu.
  2. Select Links
  3. Type the URL you want to link to.
  4. Type the text you want to appear in the menu.
  5. Click the Add to Menu button.
  6. After it appears under Menu Structure, hit one of the Save Menu buttons.

Changing the menu item’s name in your menu

Label_Menu

  1. In your WP Admin navigate to Settings -> Menu.
  2. Click the little arrow next to the item you want to remove.
  3. Change the name by changing Navigation Label.
  4. Hit one of the Save Menu buttons.

This will not change the name of the page, post, category etc. and is especially useful if the original title/name is very long.

Changing the order of your menu items

  1. In your WP Admin navigate to Settings -> Menu.
  2. Grab and drag the item to the location you want it.
  3. Hit one of the Save Menu buttons.

Order_Menu_1 Order_Menu_2

If your menu supports several levels you can make an item the sub item of another. To do this drag the item a little to the right. If you want all the items on the same level make sure none of your items are indented.

Removing a menu item from you menu

Remove_Menu

  1. In your WP Admin navigate to Settings -> Menu.
  2. Click the little arrow next to the item you want to remove.
  3. Click Remove.
  4. After it is gone, hit one of the Save Menu buttons.

Did you find this helpful? Or do you have any corrections? Let me know in the comments 😀

Maybe you used it yourself or maybe you sent the link to a family member or friend when you did not have time to help them out!?!
