Payment services available in Norway

This is a summary of payment services presented or mentioned at The Mobile Meetup Oslo on Wednesday 24th of September.

In general, there are two types of payments services:

1. The ones with cool APIs that let developers make seemless integrations. The customer stays on your page, but the transaction-information and other sensitive data is handled by the payment service.
2. The ones that redirects the customer to their own page to complete the payment and then send them back to you when the payment is complete (or canceled or rejected).

1. The ones with the cool APIs

It seemed a lot of the people attending the Mobile Meetup would really like to use Stripe, but it was not available in Norway then. Stripe had just launched in the UK. UPDATE February 27th 2016: Stripe is available in Norway.

Braintree

One of the first of the new types of payments services with developer APIs. Has many official libraries: .NET, Java, Node, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Braintree was purchased by PayPal yesterday.

Startup fee: none
Monthly fee: If your transaction fees adds up to less than a 100 euro (ca 800 kr) you must pay the difference.
Transaction fee: 1.8% – 2.6% plus 0.9 % plus 0.10 euro (0.81 kr)

Paymill

Another payment service available in Europe with official libraries for PHP and Java, and unofficial libraries for Python, Node, Ruby, .NET, ColdFusion, Common Lisp, Clojure and Codeigniter.

Transaction fee: 2.95% plus 0.28 euro (2.26 kr)

2. The ones that redirects

PayPal

Very well-known also among non-technical consumers. We (Lilly Apps) have been using their buttons for #lillygram and it has been a non issue among our customers. The page the customer is redirected to is responsive.

Transaction fee: 2,80 kr + 1.9% – 3,4 % depending on volume (and it is 1.9% for non-profit). PayPal also lets you use the cool API approach, but only in US and Canada.

Klarna

They seem to be a Scandinavian PayPal.

Nets

Nets are the big guys, you probably know them as BBS. They have created several products for mobile/web-payments with many different price levels (see pdf). It seems you have to buy Nets Mobile, as an addition product, if you would like the page the customer is redirected to be responsive. Or could one maybe just but Mobile and use it for «regular» web as well?

BitPay

Maybe not for everyone, but hardware.no has started accepting Bitcoins through BitPay.

Others

At LeWeb London I met Paytrail, a finish company that probably will make a move into Norway soon. Norwegians can already use a less feature rich version than the one offered in Finland and Sweden. Payex, the competitor of Nets on terminals. It seems they have a similar offering as Nets for web/mobile but no public pricing information.
